Scenes from Afghanistan...
For over ten years, resistance groups in Afghanistan fought off
invaders from Soviet Russia. The freedom fighters, or
mujahideen, eventually drove the Russians out with
the assistance of American weaponry such as Stinger missiles.
The celebration of victory was short-lived, however, as the
country fell into a civil war between rival mujahideen factions vying
for control of the interim government.
This civil war has laid waste to the country on a scale that far
outweighs that of the conflict with Russia. This scene is sadly
typical of the capital city of Kabul.
Despite the devastation of war, Afghanistan remains a breathtaking
country. Depicted here is the Band-e-Amir, a series of lakes
high in the Afghan mountains at an altitude of over 10,000 feet.
